How to clean an iPhone speaker with sound

  1. Flip the Ring/Silent switch to ring, or turn off Silent Mode in Control Centre.
  2. Press the volume up button until the volume is at maximum.
  3. Open Control Centre and make sure audio is not going to AirPods or a Bluetooth speaker.
  4. Hold the iPhone with the bottom edge facing the floor.
  5. Press Start in Water or Dust mode and let it finish.
  6. Wipe the bottom grille and the earpiece with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Where the iPhone speakers are

An iPhone has two speakers. The main one is behind the grille to the right of the charging port on the bottom edge. The grille on the left side of the port covers a microphone, so no sound comes from it, and that is normal.

The second speaker is the earpiece at the top of the screen. From iPhone 7 onward it also plays media in stereo, so this tool cleans both at once. Tilt the phone so whichever one is wet faces down.

Does the iPhone have a built-in water eject?

No. The Apple Watch has Water Lock, but iPhones do not include a water eject feature. Many people install a Siri Shortcut called Water Eject for this. A web tool does the same job without granting a shortcut permission to run on your phone, and it also gives you dust and earpiece modes.

What Apple says about a wet iPhone

Apple's support guidance is to tap the iPhone gently against your hand with the connector facing down, leave it in a dry area with some airflow, and wait at least 30 minutes before charging. Apple also says not to use an external heat source or compressed air, not to insert cotton swabs or paper into the connector, and not to put the iPhone in a bag of rice.

Questions people ask

Why does vibration not work on my iPhone?

iOS does not allow websites to use the vibration motor. The sound does the cleaning, so you lose very little.

Does it work on iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16?

Yes. It works on every iPhone that runs a current version of Safari or Chrome, including older models such as the iPhone 8 and SE.

The sound stops when my iPhone screen locks. How do I prevent that?

Keep the page open and the screen on. The tool asks the browser to keep the screen awake while cleaning, but Low Power Mode can override that, so tap the screen once if it dims.

Is a Siri Shortcut better than this web tool?

Both play a low tone. The web tool needs no install, stays up to date, and offers separate sounds for dust and the earpiece.
